Thermos FUNtainer Kids Water Bottle

Thermos FUNtainer Kids Water Bottle

Not recommended

The ubiquitous insulated steel kids straw bottle - but the lid is polypropylene and the straw stem is LDPE, so water still travels through plastic.

We don't recommend this one

Widely-owned and durable, but water passes through a plastic lid and LDPE straw stem - document it, but the steel-body reputation oversells its plastic-free-ness.

The verdict: Minimal plastic contact

The body is double-wall stainless steel, but the drink path is not plastic-free: the push-button lid is polypropylene, the straw stem is LDPE, and only the straw's spout tip is silicone. So water passes through plastic (lid and straw stem) on its way up. It is far better than an all-plastic toddler bottle and it is genuinely everywhere and leakproof, but it is minimal-contact, not the silicone-only bottle its steel-body reputation implies. We document it as the widely-available baseline, not as a plastic-free pick.

The FUNtainer is the default kids straw bottle in most of America - sold in every big-box store and pharmacy, cheap, dishwasher-safe, and covered in licensed characters. You push a button and a straw pops up; it snaps closed leakproof for a bag. The insulated stainless body keeps drinks cold for ~12 hours, and it's tough enough to survive daily toddler abuse. Sold in 12oz and 14oz straw versions.

Pros

  • Genuinely everywhere - easy to buy, easy to replace, cheap
  • Insulated stainless body keeps drinks cold ~12h
  • Leakproof push-button lid; straw is removable for cleaning
  • Durable and kid-proof

Cons

  • Straw and small valve parts need a narrow brush to clean well
  • Steel-body reputation oversells how plastic-free it actually is - see the rating
