i
Nespresso VertuoPlus black matte coffee machine by De'Longhi with water tank

Nespresso VertuoPlus (ENV150)

Not recommended

Nespresso's popular Vertuo pod machine (made by De'Longhi). A removable plastic water tank feeds internal plastic lines, and hot water is driven through a capsule spun inside a plastic assembly - the same plastic water path as any pod system.

We don't recommend this one

Same offender class as Keurig - a plastic water tank and internal plastic lines feed hot water through a capsule spun inside a plastic assembly. The espresso-machines category has no pick; for an automatic machine with a plastic-free brew path see the Simply Good Coffee Brewer in drip machines, or brew manually.

The verdict: Mostly plastic

The VertuoPlus is a pod machine, so its water path is plastic by design. Cold water sits in a removable ~1.2L plastic tank, is heated and moved through internal plastic lines, and is then driven through an aluminum capsule that the machine spins at high speed inside a plastic brew head and capsule holder. The capsule shell is aluminum, but it is handled, pierced, and spun by plastic components, and the water reaching it has already traveled through a plastic tank and plastic tubing. It's BPA-free and the aluminum capsules are recyclable, but there is no way to run hot water through this machine without it contacting plastic.

The Nespresso VertuoPlus, manufactured for Nespresso by De'Longhi (model ENV150), is one of the most common capsule machines in US kitchens. Unlike Original-line Nespresso, Vertuo brews by spinning the capsule at high speed while hot water is forced through it. It runs on proprietary aluminum Vertuo capsules and brews from a removable ~1.2L reservoir.

Pros

  • Fast, consistent single-serve coffee; aluminum capsules are recyclable
  • BPA-free materials

Cons

  • Same plastic-and-heat contact class as any pod machine - see the materials verdict
  • Depends on single-use capsules and plastic plumbing to work
