Plastic-Free Underwear & Undergarments
Underwear, bras, and base layers - the clothing in the most constant, most intimate contact with skin, and the highest-priority plastic-free swap in a wardrobe. Pick who it's for below.
Why plastic matters here
Underwear is the single best place to start with plastic-free clothing, for the same reasons a baby bottle beats a serving platter: contact time and contact area. It's worn all day, directly against the body's most absorptive and sensitive skin, often warm and damp with sweat - exactly the conditions that mobilize whatever chemistry a fabric carries. Most mainstream underwear is majority synthetic (polyester or nylon with elastane), which sheds microplastics and can hold dyes, anti-odor treatments, and PFAS-based finishes against the skin for hours. Leakproof/period underwear has drawn specific scrutiny after PFAS were found in several brands. Even "cotton" underwear almost always has an elastane or covered-synthetic waistband. Getting this one category right - natural fiber, minimal or natural-rubber elastic, clean finishing - is a bigger real-world win than any single outer garment.

What to look for
- Aim for a natural main fabric - organic cotton, merino wool, or silk - not polyester or nylon
- The waistband/elastic is the usual catch - elastane is standard; some brands use covered natural rubber instead
- "100% cotton" usually describes the body only; the band, gusset lining, or lace trim may still be synthetic
- Avoid "moisture-wicking," "quick-dry," and "anti-odor" performance underwear - those are synthetic and/or treated
- For period/leakproof underwear, look for brands that publish PFAS-free (third-party tested) results
- GOTS-certified organic cotton is the strongest signal of both natural fiber and restricted chemistry
