Stanley
Stanley sells the 18/8 stainless body as the story, but the sip path is usually plastic: even the rugged Classic camp mug ships with a press-fit, drink-through lid made of Tritan, so as sold you sip over plastic. The steel is real and durable, but the lids that make these mugs and bottles usable are BPA-free plastic, and that's the part your mouth meets. It's a steel brand that leans on plastic exactly where a plastic-avoider would notice.
How clear are their specs?
The steel grade is stated and the lids are labeled Tritan/BPA-free, but the "BPA-free" shorthand does the talking and the plastic sip surface isn't something the marketing dwells on.
Lead testing disclosure
After independent XRF testing (Lead Safe Mama) and a viral January 2024 controversy, Stanley issued an official statement with real substance rather than pure deflection: "Our manufacturing process currently employs the use of an industry standard pellet to seal the vacuum insulation at the base of our products; the sealing material includes some lead." Stanley specified that the pellet is covered by a stainless steel layer inaccessible to consumers unless that layer is removed (which a spokesperson called "rare"), said it follows FDA guidelines, and stated its engineering team is developing alternative sealing materials. This names the actual construction and mechanism rather than a vague "lead-free" claim, though Stanley did not publish its own lab report or test numbers.

Products to avoid
Documented so you know what to skip — each still has a full breakdown and sources.
Classic Legendary Camp Mug
Rugged 18/8 steel camp mug, but the press-fit drink-through lid is Tritan plastic - so as sold you sip over plastic.
Quencher H2.0 FlowState Tumbler (40oz)
The viral 40oz tumbler has a recycled-steel body, but the FlowState rotating lid and reusable straw are plastic and you sip through or over them - so it is not plastic-free despite the steel-cup reputation.
